I welcome the work of groups like Independent Age to support the elderly in our country. It is important that people are treated with dignity and receive appropriate care in retirement.
Due to prior parliamentary commitments, I was unfortunately unable to attend the drop-in event hosted in Parliament on the 24th of April.
Whilst I understand concerns surrounding the costs of personal care, we will ultimately need a fair and sustainable approach to funding social care system. The government’s forthcoming Green Paper on social care will set out potential options for a future social care system that is fit for the future.
Options reportedly under consideration as to how people pay for their care include a more generous means-test; a cap on lifetime social care charges; an insurance and contribution model; a Care ISA; and tax-free withdrawals from pension pots.
